Cat afraid of ceiling fan

I've been reading posts on this thread and I seem to be having the same problem. I don't want to post this in the wrong section. Anyway, my cats, 2 1/2 years and 4 1/2 months, aren't too fond of a fan, but they do like to sit near it. Recently the problem of running the fan has increased. They have a box fan. When the fan is running, it's like there is a force keeping them from walking past it. Even a small amount of wind from the fan causes them to tremble. As you can see in the photos below, they have both come in contact with the fan. I'm wondering if anyone has ideas as to what could cause this behavior.

In the first photo, the one on the right has come in contact with the fan.

I'm not 100% sure the other cat has touched it. However, she has been with me for 2.5 years and was never around the fan before.

The behavior seems to start from the time the box fan is turned on.

The behavior seems to increase when it's in a lower room. Also, after the fan has been running for a few hours, the cats seem to get really tired and tired of trying to keep away from it.

In the photos below, the fan is in the main living room, which is the living room, kitchen and dining room combined. It's the furthest room from the bedroom where the cats sleep. The bedroom is another room with a fan. The cats don't mind that fan.

Thanks for the additional photos.

In the photo below, the fan is off. When the fan is off, there's almost no wind and the cats can walk right past the fan and into the kitchen without any difficulty.

I'm not quite sure what other info you need. Maybe I'm the only one, but I don't think so.

Your best bet is to keep an eye on your kitties around the fan and see what their response is. Do they jump out of their way, try to hide? Are they scared? Do they run off to hide?

What is the ambient temperature in your home in the vicinity of the fan? If it's very warm, can you turn down the temperature or even move the fan to a different part of the house?

I've had cats that were scared of my fan, and they were scared by the sound of it. One of my cats would go to the bedroom and not come out of the bedroom even though I could hear her meowing and scratching at the door (I'd put a food bowl on the floor so she wouldn't knock it over). I found that if I played some classical music, she'd leave the bedroom and come up to eat and be petted, and the fan wasn't near the bedroom. She eventually learned that the fan didn't bother her, and we gradually moved it farther and farther away from the bedroom until it was pretty far away.

I would say that it's possible that your cat can move out of the way, and it just takes a little time to get used to it.

My mother had the same problem with the dog and cat being terrified of the fan. We kept it in the kitchen. She turned it off when she'd be out of the room, so the cats would have to leave their hiding spot and come out to see what it was.

I think if you can, put it in a different part of the house where the cat is not frightened by it. I know that if I put it where my cat has never been, she'll come up to check it out, but I can also get up and pet her if she's in her favorite spot, and she'll walk over to my computer if it's on. So it's possible that she's uncomfortable with it but doesn't feel threatened by it.

Have you tried to get an assistant to play with her, or just distract her?

When our cat was really little, and we had to use the fan for the first time, the problem was that the cat would either jump right in the middle of it, or stand very still in the corner. The solution was to find the fan that she'd stay out of, and then play with her while we used the other fan.

When we moved into our new house, we got an air purifier, which was a very noisy thing. The first time my cat walked in the room, she'd go over to the windowsill to look at it, and she'd start growling when it was too noisy. (She was 5 at the time, so it didn't take long.)

So, I think it's possible that your cat's reaction to the fan is the same way. The sound might make her uncomfortable, but maybe it's not something she's actually afraid of.

Is your cat spayed or neutered? We do have a cat that we don't let outside, and she is neutered. She's also not comfortable being petted. If we touch her, she gets upset. She knows we won't hurt her, but she's scared of being touched.

We've had our cat for about 5 years, and he's never spayed/neutered. He's very tolerant of being petted and is very friendly towards people. I wouldn't say he's afraid of being petted, but he doesn't like it. The only time he freaks out is if a stranger (not a family member) comes up and gently touches his face. We think he's a little territorial about that, and we really don't want anyone getting hurt.

So maybe your cat just hates fan noise?

That could be it!

Our cat is neutered, but we haven't had her spayed yet. She loves to be petted, and is comfortable around family members. She only gets upset if a stranger (not family member) comes up and touches her.
