Kawi cat polymer clay pattern

Here is my first pattern for the upcoming Polymer Clay Festival at the San Diego Conventions Center (July 24-27, 2016)! This week we will be making “cat head, paw, ears and whiskers”. I like this pattern because I think it is pretty interesting to see the different parts of the face and the different parts of the body in action! I also think it is great for beginners to practice their polymer clay shaping skills before they start working on their finished art. I hope you enjoy this pattern and would love to hear what you think. I will be making an entry into the San Diego Polymer Clay Festival contest and will add the link to this pattern when it is finished. Thanks for looking!

Instructions

Begin with two colors, one white and one red. This pattern requires one white and four red colors.

Color the piece with white clay. Begin the ear by shaping a triangle out of the white clay. Use your fingers to make sure that you are pulling your fingers firmly to shape the ear. When it is about halfway done, turn it over so the ear is on the other side. Make the ear larger. Turn it over and color it with the white clay. Color the red clay for the eyes. Be sure to make them the size that you want and make them the color that you want. Use the white clay for the eyes and the red clay for the pupils. Once you are finished coloring, make the whiskers.

7 Add eyes. When you have made the ear, cut away the excess clay. Use a small needle to poke a hole in the top of the ear. Color your eyes with the red clay. Once you have finished coloring, push the red clay into the hole to make your eyes.

**Figure 7-7:** Add eyes.

8 Form the body. Color the tl and attach it to the rear of the piece. Make sure that it is in the shape that you want it to be and that the tip is pointed at one side. If you are not satisfied with how the tl looks, you can always pnt or draw on it. Make sure that you attach it firmly.

9 Make the legs. Form the legs and attach them to the body, with the front one slightly higher than the rear one. Make sure that the tip of the front leg is at the rear and the tip of the back leg is at the front (see Figure 7-8). Once you have finished coloring, you can start drawing or pnting on the piece.

**Figure 7-8:** Make the front and back legs.

10 Add the markings. Use a small brush and pnt the markings for the dog. If you want your dog to have spots, then use the white clay and make the markings the color of the hr. If you want the markings to be black, use black pnt. Don't make any markings near the eyes. You want the markings to be in the middle of the body and on the legs.

11 Add detls. Continue to make the marks on the legs and the chest, leaving some space on the back, where the legs attach. Color the nls of the front and back paws. Color the teeth. Make sure that the tl is attached with the right side up.

12 Assemble the body. Press the tl into the hole on the front of the body and attach it, with the right side up (see Figure 7-9). Once you have the tl attached, start attaching the legs. You may have to use a little more clay and some force to make the pieces fit. Once you have attached the legs and the tl, you should see a small gap between the eyes and the mouth. You can use the back of your hand or the edge of the palette to press the pieces together. Let the body cool completely before handling or pnting.

**Figure 7-9:** Press the tl into the hole in the body.

13 Make the eyes. Color the irises a darker color than the rest of the eye (white or tan), and use a medium-sized brush. Pnt the eyes on the left and right sides of the head separately. Make sure that you have placed the eye on the correct side of the head. Don't pnt the lids of the eyes.

14 Make the nose. If you don't want to draw the nose yourself, see the section in Chapter 6 on nose design (Chapter 6). After pnting the eyes, pnt the nose and use a medium brush. Draw the nose with the tip of your finger. Make sure that it is in the center of the nose. The nostril holes should be on the outside and the inner part of the nose should be flat. Color the nostril holes with black pnt. You may want to make a smaller nostril hole for the right side of the face. Let the nose dry before moving on.

15 Make the eyebrows. For the right side of the face, pnt a line for the eyebrows that is shorter than the eyebrow for the left side. The black pnt should be thicker and thicker as you work your way from the bottom of the nose to the top of the eyebrows (see Figure 7-10).

**Figure 7-10:** Pnt thick, black eyebrows.

16 Make the hr. Use a light touch and pnt small pieces of hr on both sides of the head. It should be as smooth as possible (see Figure 7-11).

**Figure 7-11:** Make the hr in large strokes.

17 Make the hr on the right side of the face. To make the hr, follow the guidelines in Step 16 for the left side of the face, but start on the left side of the head, pnt hr, and make small strokes for the bottom of the hr. As you move up, the hr will thicken as it goes out from the face (see Figure 7-12).

**Figure 7-12:** Make the hr in several layers.

18 Make the beard. Begin at the center of the face and use a thicker brush to pnt hr. Add the beard with short, wide strokes (see Figure 7-13). Use darker and thicker black pnt to draw the beard. Make the hr darker at the bottom to appear thicker and add more hr
